The source of the Marie Brizard legend

The city was Bordeaux and the date, 1750. Marie Brizard, born on June 28 1714, spent her time on her charitable works. On January 11, as she was crossing the Place Royale in Bordeaux, she was told that Thomas, a West Indian sailor off the Intrepid, lay burning with fever in the port. Marie Brizard took him in and saved his life. In exchange, Thomas gave her the secret of an extraordinarily fragrant liqueur.

A unique, original recipe… Marie Brizard perfected this product in her own kitchen and it wasn’t long before she obtained a crystal-clear liquid with a fine bouquet filled with aromas and a powerful but unknown flavour, a liquid that was both pleasing and comforting. This was anisette, the creation presented as Marie Brizard’s speciality for the following two hundred years.

Marie Brizard wins over the consumers. Marie Brizard anisette is an unusual product, both because of its composition and also because of its clear, brilliant aspect, its bouquet and taste with its the subtle dosing of herbs, its mildness (25° alcohol) and its refinement and elegance, obtained through the quality and variety of ingredients used in its creation and its double distillation. “When our anisette is mixed with water it turns cloudy and takes on a blueish tint. We wish to conserve this effect because it is constantly used to distinguish our product from imitations and has become a sure certification of identity for our liqueur
